Personal history:

We are Kirby & Carolyn Baltzer, and we have been married for 35 years. We have two married daughters, and so far, two grandsons. We live in a big old brick house about 7 miles SE of Freeman, SD on a 20 acre spread.

Kirby grew up on a farm about 25 miles straight west of where we now live, and graduated from Scotland High School.

Carolyn is a pastor’s daughter so she moved around a bit. She was born in Avon, SD, then moved to Delft, MN, then on to Lynden, WA, where she graduated from high school, then moved to Groveland, IL.

We met at Grace College of the Bible in Omaha, NE and were married in 1974. In 1975, Kirby was anxious to get out of Omaha and move back into the country; so we moved to a little country house near Kirby’s home. Shortly after that, Kirby found a job near Freeman, and we have lived in the Freeman area ever since.

For most of our married lives, Kirby has been self-employed, restoring antique furniture, resilvering mirrors, and finishing new cabinetry for a local carpenter. Recently he has had to retire from that job for health reasons, due to the cumulative effects of the fumes over all those years.

We both continue to drive school bus for Freeman Public Schools, which we have done for over 20 years.

We enjoy music, dabbling in antiques, restoring our 1923 house, and studying the Scriptures. Kirby enjoys playing his classical guitar, and Carolyn enjoys arranging hymns on the piano.

Wood history:

In our last place where we lived for about ten years, we burned wood exclusively for heating our home and the shop. Fifteen years ago, when we moved to our current home, we quit burning wood and began heating with propane and a heat pump. We never did like the noise of the furnace fan, nor the "cold" air blowing on us, nor the price of our heating bills.

Last year with the high price of fuel, we decided to start burning wood again. We tried several different stoves, when Kirby decided to build his own stove with some of his own ideas that he had picked up over the years. As he researched wood stoves on the internet for more good ideas, he discovered the Sedore.

Being very intrigued with what he had read, we drove to Deer Lake, MN to see it work. We were so impressed that we not only bought the stove, but we decided to become a dealer.

What a difference! We had almost forgotten how warm and cozy a wood stove can be. And so economical compared to propane or electricity. We are so glad that we found the Sedore, and rediscovered the beauty and comfort of wood heat.
